Diego Chiapello, legally blind since birth, isn’t one of Italy’s famous “mama’s boys” who live with their parents into adulthood. The 27-year-old lives alone in Milan, works as a network administrator, loves diving and dreams of sailing across the Atlantic with a sight-impaired(有视力障碍的)crew.

Obviously, he’s not your average disabled person — but especially so in Italy. The country has more barriers to integration than almost anywhere else on the continent. Among European countries, Italy ranks third from the bottom in accessibility for the disabled, ahead of only Greece and Portugal. People who use wheelchairs, especially, find it difficult to navigate the country’s cobblestone(鹅卵石)streets, ride buses or visit restaurants, shops and museums. Less than a quarter of Italy’s disabled hold jobs compared with 47 percent for Europe.

But the biggest obstacle for the country’s physically challenged may, in fact, be the fabled Italian family. Because of the social defect that still attaches to disabilities, “they tend to keep disabled people at home and out of public view,”explains Giovanni Marri, head of an employment training center in Milan that caters to the handicapped. Thus while 15 percent of the country’s families include a disabled person, according to surveys, only 2 percent of Italians report going to school with a disabled person and only 4 percent work with one.

Italians are beginning to recognize the problem. Over the past decade, the government has passed laws targeting everything from workplace discrimination to accessibility requirements. A recent study by the European Union found that 85 percent of Italians admit that public transportation and infrastructure(基础设施)are inadequate for the handicapped, and 97 percent say action is needed. But the biggest barrier is psychological. “Italian companies are afraid of hiring disabled people,” says Chiapello. The only way to alter that, he says, is for Italy’s disabled to do what he did —get out of the house and demand change.

1.Which of the following words best describes “mama’s boys”?

  A.Ordinary. B.Optimistic. C.Dependent. D.Desirable.

2.In this passage, Chiapello is cited as an example of .

A.unusual disabled Italians B.courageous blind sailors

C.typical handicapped people D.vulnerable disabled Europeans

3.In Italy, where are the disabled people most likely to be?

  A.On the street. B.At home.

  C.In school. D.At work.

4.Italy’s general public will most probably agree that .

A.physical inadequacies are the biggest obstacle for the disabled

B.things should be done to remove the barriers against the disabled

C.workplace prejudices toward the disabled are hardly recognizable

D.disabled people should reduce the need of going to public places

5.What is the passage mainly about?

A.Italy has not done enough in aiding the disabled.

B.Italy’s disabled people should get out of their houses.

C.Italian people have been blind to troubles of the disabled.

D.Italian ways of aiding the disabled should be encouraged.

1.C。根据文章第一段中的“…‘mama’s boys’ who live with their parents into adulthood.”

2.A。根据文章第二段中“…he’s not your average disabled person…”,作者举这个例子主要是比较特殊。

3.B。根据文章第三段中“…They tend to keep disabled people at home…”,残疾人大多数时间待在家里。

Questions 11-15 are based on the following passage:
As our van pulled up to the ranch (牧场) to start a three-month program for troubled boys, we passed a cowboy on his horse. Bill was the owner of the ranch. We made eye contact though the dusty window and he winked(挤眼睛)at me and touched the brim of his cowboy hat in welcome.
All summer long Bill and his ranch-hands taught us to ride horses, chop wood, and round up cattle. We started to understand the value of working with our hands. Knowing how important it was for boys like me to know that someone believed in them, he trusted us to do the job and do it right. We never let him down.
The last day at the ranch, Bill pulled me aside and praised me for the work I had done- not only on the ranch, but also on myself. He told me if I ever needed anything I could count on him.
Four years later, I took him up on that offer. I called him up and asked for a job. I told him how his confidence in me had given me the courage to change my life. He offered me a job on the spot. I'm proud to say that each summer I'm the one in the ranch to open the gate for a van full of young men who need someone to believe in them, so they can learn to believe in themselves.

Athletes are constantly making greater and greater efforts to lower time for taces; increase heights or distances.
The world of medicine has had its series of successes too. Christian Barnard performed several successful heart transplants. Other medical experts have achieved organ transplants. Throughout the ages, mankind has found treatment and cures for tuberculosis(肺结核), cancer, and other disease. A cure of AIDS might soon be discovered.
Age does not seem to slow down achievers. Tina Turner at 54 is still singing with great energy and attracting sell-out crowds wherever goes.
At work, we go all out for achievements too. Success may mean organizing a conference more effectively and efficiently each year. Sometimes, it is not a pat on the back or the promotion that makes it worthwhile. Often, it is the inner thrill and satisfaction of achievement, no matter how small it may be.

The night is not what it was. Once, the Earth was cast half in shadow. Then came fire, candle, and light bulb, gradually drawing back the curtain of darkness. But a brighter world has its drawbacks.
An estimated 30 percent of outdoor lighting----plus even some indoor lighting---is wasted. Inefficient lighting costs U.S. about $ 10.4 billion a year, according to Bob Gent of the International Dark-Sky Association, a nonprofit that aims to control light pollution.
Last year in Sydney, an estimated 2.2 million Australians switched off their lights during" Earth Hour", briefly reducing that city's energy use by more than 10 percent. Motivated by such trends, more than two dozen cities worldwide went dim on March 29 this year in an hour-long demonstration.
A number of groups are trying to measure light pollution and assess its effects on the environment in the hope that people will reduce their own contribution to the problem. Scientists are trying to report how many starts we can see. In dark rural areas, about 2,000 stars are typically visible at night, compared with "maybe five" in a bright city square----and about 5,000 in centuries past.
People who are working while others are star-gazing may face the greatest risks. Nighttime exposure to white light can cause the growth of tumors(肿瘤), experiments show. Two decades of research indicate that women who work night shifts have unusually high rates of breast cancer.

  1)可以参照环球卓越核心词汇宝典,大家不一定完全按照A到Z的背诵顺序,找到适合自己的背词习惯;

  2)有效的重复,今天背过的明天一定得回过头再背一遍,适当的重复背诵加深记忆,切不可背完一遍就了事,这样是不会熟练掌握单词的;

  3)多背多得,少背少得,充分利用零碎时间;

  Part Two Reading Comprehension

  Directions:

In this part there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four

suggested answers. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET

by drawing with a pencil a short bar across the corresponding letter in the brackets.

Questions 11—15 are based on the following passage:

In the same way that a child must be able to move his arms and legs before he can learn to walk, the child

must physiologically be capable of producing and experiencing particular emotions before these emotions can be

modified through learning. Psychologists have found that there are two basic processes by which learning takes

place. One kind of learning is called "classical conditioning.' This occurs when one event or stimulus is

continuously followed by a reward or punishment. It is through classical conditioning that a child learns to

associate his mother's face and voice with happiness and love, for he learns that this person provides food and

comfort. Negative emotions are learned in a similar fashion.

The second kind of learning is called "operant (动作的) conditioning." This occurs when an individual

learns to do things that produce rewards in his environment and learns not to do things that produce punishments.

For example, if a mother always attends to her baby when he cries and cuddles him until he is quiet, she may teach

him that if he cries he will get attention from mother. Thus, the baby will learn to increase his crying in order to

  have his mother more.

  11. The main purpose of this passage is to ___________.

  A. teach children how to learn to produce and experience certain emotions

  B. give the common reader a general description of two basic kinds of learning

  C. give parents some advice on how to modify their children's emotions through learning

  D. discuss with psychologists how positive and negative feelings are produced

  12. If a child is bitten or startled several times by a dog, he may learn to associate furry (有皮毛的) animals with

pain or startle and thus develop a fear of furry animals. This is a typical example of learning through

  _________.

  A. classical conditioning B. operant conditioning

  C. both A and B D. neither A nor B

  13. If your jokes often find a ready echo in a person, you will learn through __________ that telling jokes to this

person is fun, and you will try with greater efforts to be humorous in his presence.

  A. classical conditioning B. operant conditioning

  C. neither A nor B D. some other sorts of conditioning

  14. The word "cuddle" in Para. 2 most probably means _____________.

  A. persuade B. hold close and lovely

  C. threaten D. shout at

  15. How can a mother help the baby to cry less?

  A. Cuddle the baby until he is quiet.

  B. Leave the baby alone.

  C. Do not always attend to the baby.

  D. Teach the baby not to cry.
